What is Autism ? Autism Spectrum Disorders are puzzling developmental disorder that significantly affects a student’s ability to communicate, interact with others, and learn in a conventional manner. Despite these difficulties, children with autism do grow and learn, albeit often at a different developmental rate than other children. Many educational approaches can significantly improve the quality of life of persons with autism and their families. It is important to note that no single program or combination of interventions will meet the needs of every student. The goal of this document is to help educators and school administrators become familiar with the learning styles of students with autism and with the various educational approaches designed to meet their unique needs. Ongoing nteraction with children with autism in your school community can prove to be a fulfilling experience for all involved, and it can permanently shape the future of children with this disability. |

According to a 2007 study by the Centers forout of every 150 children today will be diagnosed with an autism pectrum disorder. ASA estimates that 1.5 million Americans and their families are now affected. Autism is costing Disease Control and Prevention, as many as one the U.S. at least $35 billion annually. Autism knows no racial, ethnic, or social boundaries and can affect any family regardless of income, lifestyle, or education. The chances of knowing a person or family affected by autism are increasing every single day. Although the overall incidence of autism is consistent around the globe, it is four times more prevalent in boys than in girls. |
